Matrix

Modified on Mon, 19 Aug, 2024 at 1:09 PM

A matrix is a type of task in which one or more items in a table will be evaluated using the same set of options in the row or column.

You can use this type of task when different items have the same answer options to be given. It can be applied to evaluate semantic differences, likert scales, etc.

Set up

To create any task, you must have Administrator or Moderator access. Using one of these accesses you must go to the activity's gear menu and click on “+ Tasks”. If you haven't yet created your first activity, you should do so before proceeding. Learn more about creating an activity here.

1. Choose “Matrix” from the list of tasks.

2. Use the text box to write the question statement, instructions and any other information you deem necessary. Adjust the text formatting using the icons (bold, italics, background colors, text colors, alignment, etc).

You can supplement your assignment statement with a video, photo or file. To do this, simply click on the “Add Media” button in the top right-hand corner of the text box and upload it.

3. You can also change the task (question) code using the rounded field next to the task list. The code of a task is important for identifying the question in the database and also for viewing the answers on the platform. OW Voices will always place the screen “T” followed by a natural number in ascending order for task codes.

Remember that the answer option code cannot contain special characters, spaces or just the number 0.

4.  Choose how many rows and columns the matrix will contain.

5. Choose whether the matrix will be single selection per row, per column or multiple choice.

6. Define the description of the rows and columns. You can use the scroll bar to write and view the columns of the matrix if it has more than three columns.

7. If necessary, change the answer option codes (rows and columns) using the rounded fields next to them. The answer option codes for a task are important for identifying and processing the answers in the database. OW Voices will always put natural numbers in ascending order for the answer option codes.

Remember that the answer option code cannot contain special characters, spaces or just the number 0.

8.  You can add logic and conditions to your question to direct them to another one based on the answer given in the task.

Default → define which task the respondent will be redirected to after answering the current task. Here you can add a skip or even choose “finish”. This option will only be applied if the respondent does not qualify for the other conditions specified in “If you respond”.
If you answer → add a logical condition for the flow of your activity.

9. Define the description of the comment box in the editor.

How will the participants visualize this type of task?

This is an example of how participants visualize this type of task.

Graphs and Tables

In the “Reports” menu, Administrators, Moderators and Observers will be able to view graphs for all types of tasks. For Matrix tasks, a graph will be generated for each column, with the answer options in the rows differentiated by color.

The table below the graph will display the answers in absolute numbers and percentages.

If you want to see all the groups in the same chart, use the customize function and choose the stacked bar chart.

How will I view this type of task in the database?

The CSV/Excel export will display a column for each row and column combination. For each answer (the rows), the value in the cell of a column represents the answer option selected by the respondent while carrying out the task. In CSV/Excel code exports, the rows will display the code that corresponds to the column the respondent selected.

For exports using the answer label (text), the rows will display the exact name of the answer option the respondent selected. Remember that if the column name is a number, the export will be a number (not necessarily the same as the answer code).

Remember when reading your database:
Empty cell → the participant was not shown the question.
Cell with only the number 0 → the participant did not select that answer option.
